Outline of Essay

Question: How does Shakespeare explore the idea fate in Romeo and Juliet?

The ideas I think I will use are: Foreshadowing, Co-incidences, Metaphor and Prologue. The order I think I will use is: Foreshadowing first because metaphors and the prologue are branches of this. Then Prologue followed by Metaphor then Co-incidences.

Foreshadowing evidence:

Foreshadowing is a warning or mention of a future event.

ROMEO

I fear, too early: for my mind misgives
Some consequence yet hanging in the stars
Shall bitterly begin his fearful date
With this night’s revels and expire the term
Of a despised life closed in my breast
By some vile forfeit of untimely death.
But He, that hath the steerage of my course,
Direct my sail! On, lusty gentlemen.

Prologue evidence:

The prologue is an example of fate that is foreshadowing because they are destined to suicide.

“Two star-crossed lovers take their life”

Metaphor evidence:

Throughout the book Romeo talks about being on a ship and that God is sending wind to direct him to wherever God wants him to go. He believes God will do what’s right.

JULIET

Go ask his name: if he be married.
My grave is like to be my wedding bed.

Co-incidences evidence:

Romeo seeing the invitation and deciding to go and see her. In the play Romeo helps the blind person read the invitation to the guests.

Romeo not receiving the letter. At the end when he is in Mantua he misses the important letter that tells him about Juliet.

Romeo receives the wrong letter at the start and misses the right letter at the end.

Friar Lawrence would have made it in time but he stumbled on the gravestones and missed Romeo dying by seconds.
